Plein Air SK - Gem Lakes

The third annual Plein Air Saskatchewan Paint Out was held in Gem Lakes, Narrow Hills Provincial Park, SK in September 2024.

Plein Air Projects

My art doesn’t tend to focus on landscapes, so plein air painting is always a fun challenge.

This time, I decided to try out oils instead of my usual plein air go-to, watercolours. While they required more prep and supplies to pack, I found them very rewarding. I used Holbein and Cobra water-soluble oils on clear gessoed birch panels.

I was also able to capture some excellent photography references for future paintings, including some for some birds, which are my current favourite subject.

September was a great time to be up north - despite painting lakeside in the sticks, there were relatively few bugs around. The leaves were also starting to turn, which added some lovely yellow contrast to the green scenery.
